While on vacation and heading to Utah, we stopped for the night in Albuquerque, NM, and I decided to check out a new bookstore. I wandered over to the horror section, and one title immediately caught my eye: Man, Fuck This House and Other Disasters by Brian Asman.

The title instantly resonated with me. That’s absolutely something I would say if I found myself in a haunted house. I’d say it out loud, turn around, and get the hell out. So naturally, I had to pick it up.

Focusing on the main story that shares the book’s title, I found myself wondering what kind of haunted house I was about to read about. What I got was way more than I had bargained for. Without going into spoilers, this haunted house, and the things inside it, the things it creates, operates on an entirely different level. I’ve never really read a haunted house story quite like this. What unfolds is unexpected, unsettling, and genuinely inventive.

I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest.

The remaining stories in the collection were just as interesting. They’re weird, bold, and very much “out there” in ways that feel different from a lot of horror I’ve read in the past. There’s a freshness to the ideas that kept me engaged from start to finish.

I highly recommend this book. I really enjoyed it.
